Department of Energy Engineering
Thank you for your interest in the programs offered at Department of Energy Engineering, Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Our program, are built on the foundation of two outstanding energy programs; Chemical-Gas Engineering and Nuclear Engineering. Chemical-Gas Engineering program has long been recognized as one of the premier Gas Engineering program in the country. The Nuclear Engineering program has a reputation as the first program offered in Malaysia.
The Bachelor Degree in Chemical-Gas Engineering is uniquely focused on the specific needs of the downstream petroleum industry. This program has been designed to produce talented graduates in facing the challenges and uncertainty of tomorrow’s dynamic world particularly in energy sector. The curriculum of the program enables students to understand transmission and distribution, storage system, processing and liquefaction, and utilisation of gas from theoretical and practical viewpoints. The knowledge and the skills acquired in problem solving, experiment and design in gas engineering will assist the students in making scientific decisions.
The main objective of Nuclear Engineering programme is to train and prepare students to become nuclear engineers with the capability in designing, producing, constructing, R&D, maintenance, sales, consultancy, education, and training. Nuclear engineering deals with the practical application of nuclear processes. Nuclear engineering is based upon the extensive use of mathematics and physical principles. These principles are applied to radioactivity, nuclear interactions, and the interaction of radiation with materials. Further applications require the knowledge of energy removal and conversion, materials science, instrumentation and control, and chemistry. The programme was designed in such a graduate should be able to perform tasks and functions for a nuclear power program that require primarily nuclear-related qualifications, both in design and construction and in the operation of a nuclear power plant and in other nuclear related industries.
We strive to ensure that all our undergraduate students have a strong technical and analytical capabilities, but will also be complemented with a broad understanding of generic skill such as communication, leadership, team working, life-long learning, ethics and entrepreneurship that are needed in their career development. We believe that emphasizing these areas will make our students well qualified to take leadership roles in the future.
We also have a taught course graduate program in Gas Engineering and Management. The program provides an innovative curriculum that facilitates experiential learning and opportunities for students to develop critical research, thinking and methodological skills as well as creative capacities and industry-standard training in gas engineering field. This unique combination of engineering and management equips our students with both the analytic, practical and management skills that are in demand in today’s highly competitive job market. Our research master’s and doctoral students give numerous technical presentations in courses and on their research. All graduate students are also expected to publish their research in relevant peer reviewed engineering journals. This web site will give you a first glimpse of the exciting atmosphere you will experience, if you decide to join our graduate program.
The faculty members of the Department of Energy Engineering are experienced and highly qualified academics; many of them have industry-related background, actively engaged in research and have published and continue to publish papers in international scientific journals and conference proceedings. We take pride in our teaching and research facilities and offer students’ extensive hands-on learning, industrial engagement and research opportunities to enhance and complement our classroom teaching. Our research broadly covers in the area of combustion engineering, renewable engineering, membrane technology, and transmission and distribution network. Our graduating students are well prepared to enter roles in industry, research, academia, government and non-government organizations internationally and this reflects to our alumni success. Whether you are a current or former student, a potential student, or a visitor, please feel free to contact or visit us. We look forward to engaging with you.
Why Study Energy Engineering
Gas engineering is primarily concerned with two main activities:
i) The transformation of raw (hydrocarbon and non hydrocarbon) gases into more usable and marketable products through chemical and physical processes
ii) Storage, transportation, distribution and utilization of processed gases
Among related projects are gas processing, gas distribution & transmission and gas power plant. A combination of gas and chemical engineering courses makes it uniquely distinct engineering discipline. Hence, a graduate is a trained chemical engineer and could easily participate in a wide variety of petrochemical & oleochemical industries and could work in a company such as PETRONAS, SHELL, ESSO, FELDA, Energy Commission of Malaysia (EC), SIRIM, SIME DARBY, DOSH and consulting firms. Chemical-Gas graduates coud also involve in the field of academics through teaching and research activities in university and research institutes.
