Department of Computer Science at UTM focuses on the following research areas: soft computing (SC), pervasive computing (PC), information assurance and security (IAS), and operation and business intelligence (OBI).
SC is a discipline that exploits the tolerance for imprecision, uncertainty, partial truth, and approximation to provide solutions that are tractable, robust and low costs. SC plays an important role in computing since many contemporary real world problems are pervasively imprecise and uncertain.
For undergraduate students, the department provides academic staff to teach computer science courses so that the graduates are equipped with the ability to undertake research in those areas and to become a computer scientist or IT professional. For postgraduate students, the department provides academic staff to teach and supervise postgraduate students working in research on the above four areas. For staff, the department provides opportunity for the faculty members in advancing the knowledge in those four areas various ways such as facilitating collaborations with other academic institutions local and abroad, companies and research institutions.
The department is currently supporting the Bachelor of Computer Science undergraduate program, postgraduate taught programs (MSc Information Security, MSc Computer Science), and MSc and PhD research programs in Computer Science offered by the Faculty of Computing.
PC focuses on providing people the ability to access information and software applications anywhere and anytime. It comprises of two main components: the technologies required to develop pervasive computing applications and the infrastructures needed such as the network protocols across all layers of the protocol stack in wired and wireless networks.
IAS is a discipline which studies the policies, procedures, methods, and techniques that protect and defend a computer system and communications infrastructure system from threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities. It plays an important role to ensure confidentiality, integrity, authentication, and availability of data in an organization’s information systems.
OBI is a multidiscipline area of operations research/management science/decision science, artificial intelligence/computational intelligence, and enterprise information system with the aim of enabling decision makers to make well-informed, effective and timely decisions. It is plays a significant role in solving complex decision/operations research problems.
