Introduction

The School of Civil Engineering, UTM has been  organizing the bi-annual bridge model testing competition  since late 90’s. The overwhelming support and interest  shown by the students have encouraged the faculty to  organise the competition this year. This will be the 11-th  time such event is organised. The aim of the competition is to encourage students to use knowledge and creativity to  solve practical problems, particularly on bridge structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rules & regulations?

General

  • The number of students in a group must not more than five.
  • Each group should be supervised by an academic staff/advisor/teacher. Models must be displayed during the exhibition.
  • Entries not complying with the rules and regulations of the competition will be disqualified.
  • Decisions by the judges are final.

Materials

  • The model should made from balsa wood with the cross section of 5mm x 5mm as provided by the organizer.
  • Participant should bring their own glue and relevant cutting tools.
  • Other materials such as paper, thread, straws, masking tape may be used but are not provided by the organizer

Model Construction

  • The bridge must be constructed on 23 September 2019 at the place provided by  the organizer in UTM.

Model Specifications

  • Clear span between supports should be 1000 mm. The overall length should be not less than 1200 mm.
  • The model must be simply supported.
  • The deck slab of the bridge should be vertically curve at 0.0mm at support to100mm at mid-span and must be part of the bridge structure.
  • The width of the deck should be a minimum of 120 mm and can accommodate dual carriageway of at least 50 mm wide each.

  • The length of the base at both ends should not be less than 100 mm.

  • Maximum height is 300 mm.
  • Connection : glue or tie (thread).
  • The model will be tested for 5 kg loading for a duration of 30 seconds.
  • The location of the loading is at the mid-span of the bridge structure.
  • There should be NO STRUCTURE below the deck.

 

What is the model specifications?

The bridge model should follow the specification as shown in the figure below:

Balsa Wood: 5mm x 5mm x 1000mm = 24 pieces

Balsa Plate: 1.5mm x 100mm x 1200mm = 2 pieces

PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT, THERE IS NO STRUCTURE BELOW THE DECK.

THE LOCATION OF THE LOADING IS AT THE MID-SPAN OF THE BRIDGE STRUCTURE.

What are the criteria for assessment?
CATEGORY MARKS
Lightness and Least deflection 40%
Creativity and Buildability 30%
Poster and Multimedia presentation 30%
Where is the venue for the competition?

The competition will be taken place at Sultan Iskandar Hall, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, 81310 UTM Skudai, Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.

 

Is there any accommodation provided?

We are sorry that accommodation for participants are not provided. However there are many accommodations available inside and also outside the campus area. Some of them are listed HERE.

Who can participate?

Open to undergraduate students from local and international colleges, matriculations and Form 4, 5 & 6 of secondary schools.

 

When is the closing date?

Submission of entry form, project brief and drawings must be before 15 August 2019. Notice of acceptance from the organizer will be on 31 August 2019.

 

How about poster & multimedia?

Each model must be accompanied by one (1) A3 poster and a multimedia presentation (3 minutes) during the exhibition. The A3 poster must have the following information:

 

  • Name of institution/school
  • Group-name
  • Group-members
  • Advisor
  • Model description

How much is the fees?

School :   RM350

College / University :   RM400

*The participants have to bear their own expenses for the traveling, accommodation and meals.
