About us

The School of Mechanical Engineering (SME), Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, was formerly known as the Fakulti Kejuruteraan Jentera (FKJ). It was set up in 1975 at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur campus. FKJ initially had two departments, namely, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Petroleum Engineering. A Dean managed the Faculty with the assistance of a Deputy Dean and two Heads of Departments. On 15th of March 1983, the Department of Petroleum Engineering has been expanded to form a new faculty known as the Faculty of Chemical and Natural Resources Engineering. FKJ moved to a new campus in Skudai in June 1989. To make the Faculty more marketable internationally, the University has agreed to rename FKJ to Fakulti Kejuruteraan Mekanikal (FKM) or Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FME) on 20th of December 1995. In July 2018, under the UTM Synergy 4.0, FKM was placed under new management named Faculty of Engineering (FE) together with the other five Faculties. FKM was renamed to the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME).
SME now offers a four-year academic programme in various fields of Mechanical Engineering, which upon completion, the University awards the Degree of Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours. The complete list of undergraduate programmes offered by the school is as follows:
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Honours
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Materials) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Industrial) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Aeronautics) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Automotive) with Honours
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering with Honours
Apart from the undergraduate programme, the school also offers postgraduate programmes which include a Master of Engineering by research and Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering. Several Master programmes by course work in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology, Mechanical-Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical-Materials Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, and Automotive Engineering are also offered.
The school’s state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation provide the support tools for comprehensive educational and research activities. These are supplemented by specialized university research facilities, which include Automotive Development Centre (ADC), Marine Laboratory, Composite Centre, Institute of Noise and Vibration, and Aeronautics Laboratory. In addition to these, FME also houses several research laboratories, including Systems and Control Laboratory, Material Science Laboratory, Applied Mechanics and Materials Testing Laboratory, Production EngineeringLaboratory, Industrial Engineering Laboratory, and CAD/CAE Laboratory. In line with the Research University status, several research alliances (RA) have emerged. The staff of SME is also associated with at least one of the research groups in the RAs. SME has received numerous national awards for both research and teaching. Our graduates have been very successful and have risen to distinguished positions in industries, government sectors, and academia.

From the Chair

On behalf of the School of Mechanical Engineering (SME), I wish to welcome you to the faculty and our website. The faculty was established in 1975 to provide professional education consistent with the mission of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). From its humble beginning in Kuala Lumpur its now has seven departments at the Skudai Campus with171 academic staff and a student population of 1833.

SME offers Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degrees inclusive with minor in aeronautical, marine technology, materials, automotive, manufacturing, and industrial engineering. At postgraduate level SME offers Master of Engineering degrees and Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical and its related disciplines. The Department of Design within SME offers Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. All undergraduate engineering programs are accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) since 2005. They combine the breadth and depth of engineering and technology fundamentals with the practical, hands-on aspect of the profession and that make our graduates very competitive among their peers.

SME is proud to have dedicated faculty members, with high qualifications and accomplishments. Some with many years of industrial experience and are ready to serve the students both inside and outside the classroom. Our laboratories are well-equipped and are being constantly upgraded to keep pace with time. The facilities are geared towards the needs of the students in anticipation of them working in many industries, locally and abroad.

SME is committed to provide each of its students with condusive environment, individualized attention, excellent advising and well-rounded education.

With Malaysia geared towards industrialization, now is the right time to consider a career in mechanical and its related engineering fields, and be part of our vibrant community in UTM. The rapid advancement of technology and globalization of the economy, it will continue to fuel a healthy demand for engineers and technologists at the national and international levels alike.

Should you have any questions regarding our engineering programs, please feel free to contact me.

Best regards,
Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Zaini Ahmad
