Process Integration for Minimising Resource Intake and Environmental Footprints: Conception, Success, Challenges of Circular Economy
Process Integration (PI) has been a systematic and general method for designing an integrated production system ranging from individual processes to Total Sites and recently extended even to sustainable regions development. A particular emphasis on the efficient use of energy and reducing environmental impacts have been an active target.
One of the main tools of PI is Pinch Analysis (PA), which serves as a system engineering model. It could facilitate the design and decision making toward a circular economy (CE) by identifying the target (pinch point) where the design is the most constraint. This presentation aims to highlight the challenges of the circular economy and the roles of PI in addressing and facilitating the CE design/planning. This is particularly important as the current quantitative indicator of CE is a monitoring framework. It has a limited function in suggesting the system transition design and the consideration of environmental footprints in maintaining the circularity is low, where the main focus is given on material flow. Several developments of conventional and extended PA, as well as the recent development, will be demonstrated.

Track record of managing and coordinating 94 major EC, NATO, bilateral and UK Know-How projects. Research funding attracted over 33 M€.
Co-Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Cleaner Production and Chemical Engineering Transactions, Subject Editor of Energy and Emeritus Executive Editor of Applied Thermal Engineering. The founder and President for 23 y of PRES (Process Integration for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction) conferences. Seven years Chairperson of CAPE Working Party of EFCE (European Federation of Chemical Engineering), a member of WP on Process Intensification and of the EFCE Sustainability platform.
He has been awarded by the Web of Science and Publons a Highly Cited Researcher, Top Peer Reviewer and Top Handling Editor. He authored and co-authored more than 500 papers, h-index in Google Scholar 54, in Scopus without self-reference 48.
